Sibshop – Horizons’ Sibling Network

Looking for a an opportunity designed for SIBLINGS of children with disabilities?

We feel strongly that as part of our family-focused mission we need to be attending to the needs of all of your children, not just the ones with disabilities. Siblings of children with autism or other disabilities have their own unique needs and experiences, and we will be using the renowned Sibshop model that is designed to provide them with support, education, and fun.horizonspb_119

You may be asking – What is a Sibshop?

From the Sibshop website:
“Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another – if they are given a chance. Sibshops are a spirited mix of new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range), new friends, and discussion activities. The Sibshop curriculum is used throughout the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Guatemala, Mexico, and Argentina.”

Our Sibshop is called Horizons Sibling Network, and is a registered Sibshop through the Sibling Support project. Our Sibshops are generally held every-other month on a Saturday, and include lots of games and activities, as well as information and opportunities for reflection about sibling experiences. Best of all, kids have the opportunity to meet other siblings with similar experiences, form new friendships, and have a lot of fun!
