Hi Everyone!

I don’t know what the weather is like where you are, but here in Michigan is can’t decide what to do. One minute we have snow, and the next it is sunny and 60 degrees. Definitely not fun for those of us with sinus issues! I’m hopeful that the weather is getting the last bits of winter out of it’s system so that we can have Spring for real next week. Snow gets old by this time of the year!

The feature article this week is all about dynamic communication. This is an important topic to consider for all children, especially those with social-communication disorders such as autism.

Summer is right around the corner, and that means our summer camps program is gearing up for a great time! You can check out all the summer offerings here. We’d love to spend time with your child this summer!

Did you catch the announcement last week about the free Autism Empowerment Telesummit happening next week? I have the privilege of being on a panel with 10 other world-renowned professionals speaking about autism and related disorders. Our goal is to share information and strategies that will support parents and professionals. You can get all the details by clicking here.

Make it a great week!

Looking to the horizon,
Nicole

Communication is Dynamic

By Erin Roon, MA CCC-SLP

Children talkingCommunication is a dynamic process. It goes way beyond the words we say. Many people interchange the words communication, language, and speech; but these terms are not synonymous. Speech refers to the actual words or sounds that are coming from your mouth. Language is the grammar, meaning and ability to use the words you have. When people talk about language, they are referring to both verbal and non-verbal language. Communication encompasses both language and speech, but it is more than that. It is the ability to share thoughts and experiences in a meaningful way while taking in, processing, and responding to the person you are talking with.
