The Barney Family
Our family has been working with Nicole and the RDI® program at Horizons for the past 2 1/2 years. During that time we have made a great amount of progress with our son Ian, age 15. Nicole has a great depth of knowledge about RDI® and is skilled in explaining the stages and goals. After researching many ways to help our son we found RDI® to be the most logical and well thought out in its approach. We appreciate that it targets the core deficits that affect people with autism, and teaches parents the skills needed to help children develop the skills they need in natural ways.
Being involved in RDI® has helped us better understand our son and how he perceives the world. We have seen him become a much more flexible thinker and problem solver since starting RDI®. The difference in his communication is also very noticeable as he now uses nonverbal and verbal communication in natural and effective ways. He is more successful in school today than he would have been without RDI®, and my only regret is that RDI® was not available to us when he was younger.
The team at Horizons is great to work with and they make understanding RDI® as easy as possible. We found that most clinics, and most autism treatments, just focus on younger children. At Horizons they work with individuals of all ages and we have felt very comfortable with their ability to tailor the program to our situation as parents of a teenager. They have a forum on their website to share ideas and they host parent days where we get together to share ideas and learn more about RDI® concepts. What continues to impress us is the depth of understanding they have of autism and their passion to help their clients. RDI® has made a huge difference in our lives and we highly recommend the RDI® program at Horizons to anyone with a child on the autism spectrum.
