Certified Special Education Teacher
CORE Consultant, Rhythmic Movement Training Provider

Hi!,

My name is Courtney Kowalczyk and I am one of the CORE Consultants on staff here at Horizons. I joined the Horizons family in 2005 and have loved the journey my life has taken ever since. I have the privilege of working with families impacted by autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions every day and I am very passionate about the work that I do.

I would like to share with you a little bit about myself. I hold Bachelors and Masters degrees from Grand Valley State University with emphasis on psychology, special education, and early childhood education. I am a certified special education teacher with endorsements in the areas of cognitive impairments, early childhood, and early childhood special education. I have teaching experience with children with a variety of disabilities, including cognitive impairments, autism, learning disabilities, physical impairments, health conditions, and speech and language impairments. I became an RDI® Program Certified Consultant in 2007 and remained certified until 2011.  In 2008, I began the most challenging and yet rewarding educational endeavor I have experienced to date—a quest for my doctorate in clinical psychology. I am well on my way to completing my program and look forward to what my educational journey will bring to the families I serve.

During my years as a special education teacher in the public school system I came across many different program options for children and families with special needs; however, when I was introduced to family-based developmental models of treatment, it became more and more clear to me the impact that this type of program could have on children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and their families. I decided to change my career path to private practice, and it has made such a tremendous impact on myself, my family, and the families I work with! I am very blessed to have such a wonderful husband who has supported my career path and education every step of the way. Together we have two young sons, and we love watching them grow and develop every day! Having a family has made me realize even more the importance of relationships and quality of life, which is what we strive to improve through our work at Horizons.
