Horizons Sibling Network
We feel strongly that as part of our family-focused mission we need to be attending to the needs of all of your children, not just the ones with disabilities. Siblings of children with disabilities have their own unique needs and experiences, and we will be using the renowned Sibshop model that is designed to provide them with support, education, and fun.
You may be asking - What is a Sibshop?
From the Sibshops website:
“Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in-between. They reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another - if they are given a chance. Sibshops are a spirited mix of new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability range), new friends, and discussion activities. The Sibshop curriculum is used throughout the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Guatemala, Mexico, and Argentina.”
Our Sibshop is called the Horizons Sibling Network, and we plan to host events every-other month on Saturdays. These events will provide lots of games and activities, along with some information and reflection about their sibling experiences. Best of all, kids will have the opportunity to meet other kids with special needs siblings, form new friendships, and have a lot of fun.
We are so fortunate to have the dynamic duo of Heather and Betsy developing and leading our Sibshop! Heather is a Certified Recreational Therapist and Betsy is a Certified Teacher and a Trained Sibshop Facilitator. They have all kinds of awesome plans for this group!
The next Horizons Sibling Network will be held on November 1 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at our center. A snack & drink will be provided. This session will be open to children ages 7 to 14. Investment for Horizons families is $20.00 each for the first two children and $10 for the third child. Investment for non-Horizons families is $30.00 per child. Please call the office with any questions. Registration can be done using the cart buttons below or calling the office for the registration forms.
Online Registration Instructions: To sign up more than one child for a date, click the "Add to Cart" button, change the quantity and click the "recalculate button". The correct price will appear for multiple children.
